South Florida light is short and it drops fast. The sand throws it straight back up under the chin, the sun sits near overhead for half the year, and the storm that ruins four o’clock frequently makes six o’clock the best light of the season.
So a session is planned backwards from sunset on your specific date, not forwards from when everyone is ready. That is the whole difference between a photograph of a bride and a photograph worth printing.
I handle the permits too — which venues need one, what it costs, and how long it takes to clear.
One evening,

Ninety minutes of low, side-on light across the formal gardens with almost nobody in frame. The permit costs $450 and it is the one worth paying for.
Sun near overhead. Hard shadow under the brow, a white dress at the edge of what a sensor holds. We shoot stone and shade here, or we do not shoot.
Vizcaya and Deering both shut before the good light arrives. Knowing that is why we start where we start.
The ninety minutes leading here are the session. Sand first, architecture last, because the towers hold warm reflected light after the beach has lost it.
Most people pack up. This is frequently the best part of the evening — the sky goes deep and the city comes on behind you.
