What to Wear for Your Miami Bridal Portrait Session
Your dress is already decided. Everything else on this list is what decides whether a South Florida session works or fights you the whole way. Coastal wind, humidity and very bright sand behave differently to anywhere you have planned a shoot before, and a few small choices make more difference than the gown itself.
Bring the fabric that moves
This is the single most useful thing I can tell you. Chiffon, tulle, organza and silk crepe catch the sea breeze and give a frame something to do. Heavy satin and structured mikado hold their shape beautifully standing still, and then do nothing at all when the wind comes off the water.
If you are deciding between two dresses, bring the one that moves. If you are committed to something structured, we plan around it by leaning on architecture and shade rather than open beach.
The veil is the best prop you own
A cathedral length veil in coastal wind is close to unbeatable, and it is the reason so many of the frames people save from a session are the ones with fabric in the air. A short veil in a fifteen mile an hour breeze does very little.
Bring more pins than you think you need, and bring someone who knows how your veil attaches. Re-pinning on a windy boardwalk is normal, and it is much faster when we are not improvising.
Shoes you can actually walk in
We will cross sand, coral rock, wet grass and boardwalk, sometimes in the same ninety minutes. Heels sink, and the walk between locations is usually longer than the shooting.
Bring the heels for the frames where they show
Bring flats or sandals for everything in between
Barefoot on sand photographs better than heels on sand, every time Humidity is the variable nobody plans for Whatever your hair is doing when we start, it will be doing something else an hour later. That is not a problem if we expect it. Loose styles that are meant to move tend to survive a South Florida evening far better than anything set rigidly in place.
For makeup, matte holds up better than dewy once the humidity rises, and blotting papers in a bag are worth more than touch-up powder. Bring a steamer to the location rather than steaming at home, because a dress that traveled in a car will need it again.
Color against a Miami background
Ivory against pale sand under a bright sky can read flat, because everything in the frame sits at the same brightness. That is why I plan at least one location with real color or real shade in it, whether that is coral rock, Art Deco pastel or deep green canopy.
If you want contrast in the gallery, a second look in color does more than any filter. It does not need to be a second gown. A slip dress, a robe or even a jacket over the dress gives us a completely different set of frames.
What to bring

- Flats for walking between locations
- A handheld steamer
- Blotting papers
Water, genuinely, especially between June and September Any jewelry you want photographed, in a small bag rather than already on
Timing matters more than any of this
None of the above helps if we are shooting at the wrong hour. South Florida light is short and it drops fast, and I plan every session backwards from sunset on your date. I have written about how that window actually behaves in my guide to the Miami golden hour.
