KEY BISCAYNE, FLORIDA
Bridal portraits at Cape Florida, Crandon Park and the quietest stretch of sand in Miami-Dade.

An island that makes you commit
Key Biscayne is reached by one road across the Rickenbacker Causeway, and there is a toll. That small friction is the whole appeal.
The crowds thin out, the sand is cleaner, and nobody wanders into the back of a frame the way they do on Ocean Drive.
Budget the drive into the plan. From most of Miami it is twenty to thirty minutes, and considerably more if we leave at the wrong hour.
WHERE I SHOOT
The island, end to end
Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park
The 1825 lighthouse is the oldest standing structure in Miami-Dade County.
Boardwalks, sea grape, the keeper’s cottage and long empty beach on either side.
The Cape Florida shoreline
The southwest-facing sand at the bottom of the island. This is the reason to come here, and I have written about why below.
Crandon Park
A palm grove that reads almost like a plantation row, plus the sandbar when the tide cooperates.
The Rickenbacker Causeway
The full Miami skyline sitting across open water. Best on the way home, once the city lights come up.
The village and the marina
Low buildings, boats and shade. A practical fallback when the wind comes up on the ocean side.
The one place in Miami-Dade the sun sets over water
Nearly all of Miami faces east, so the sun goes down behind the city and the beaches lose direct light early. Key Biscayne is the exception worth knowing about. The southwest shore at Cape Florida looks out across Biscayne Bay, which means you can actually watch the sun drop into water rather than into buildings.
That single fact is why I bring brides here when the request is for warm, open, uncluttered light. It is also why the park gate closing time matters, and why I plan these sessions tighter than most.
