Atlantic hurricane season runs from the first of June to the thirtieth of November. For a lot of couples that single fact takes six months off the calendar before they have looked at a venue. I think that is a mistake, and I price my summer dates lower because I would rather shoot them than talk people out of them.
Here is what the season actually looks like on the ground, and what I do differently when a session falls inside it.
Most summer days are not storms, they are one storm
A South Florida summer afternoon has a rhythm. Heat builds through the middle of the day, a convective storm arrives somewhere between two and five, it is loud and heavy and genuinely impressive, and then it moves on. What is left behind is the part nobody photographs enough.
The air after a summer storm is the cleanest it gets all year. Dust is gone, the light comes through saturated, wet paving and wet leaves hold color that dry ones do not, and the sky often breaks into something far more interesting than the flat blue of a January afternoon. I have taken frames in the twenty minutes after a June downpour that I could not have made in March.
How I plan a summer session differently
I watch the radar on the day rather than the forecast in the week, because a summer forecast will say the same thing every day for a month I build in a shift. If a cell is sitting over the location at six, we move the start rather than cancel the session I keep one covered or architectural location in the plan, so there is always somewhere to be while a cell passes
I aim to be outside immediately after rather than immediately before
That last point is the whole strategy. In summer the best light frequently arrives after the weather people were worried about, and getting it means being nearby and ready rather than rescheduling at noon.
Humidity is the harder problem
Honestly, the storms are easier to work around than the humidity.
Between June and September the air is heavy from morning onward, and it affects hair, makeup and how comfortable you are standing in a gown for ninety minutes.
Practical answers: schedule later rather than earlier, keep the dress in air conditioning until the last possible moment, bring water and blotting papers, and choose a style that is meant to move rather than one that has to stay perfectly set. And the actual hurricanes
Named storms are real and I am not going to pretend otherwise. They are also forecast days ahead, which is very different from an afternoon thunderstorm that appears in an hour. Nobody is surprised by a hurricane in the modern era.
What that means practically is that a genuine storm threat is visible with enough notice to make a decision calmly rather than at dawn on the day. Why the summer dates are cheaper
Demand drops between June and September, and my calendar is genuinely quieter. Rather than hold out for high season pricing on dates that would otherwise sit empty, I take 15% off any collection for weddings in those months. That stacks with the weekday discount, so a Tuesday in August is meaningfully cheaper than a Saturday in February.
