Miami’s oldest neighborhood, and its most overgrown
The Grove was settled before Miami was a city, and it still behaves differently. The streets are narrow, the tree cover is dense, and the water is never far away. It holds more usable texture per square mile than anywhere else I photograph.
It is also the most competitive place in Miami to book. Vizcaya in particular runs on permits and time slots, and the good ones go months ahead.

The Grove, location by location
Vizcaya Museum and Gardens
Permit costs, party-size limits, early access, and where the light lands.
The Kampong
A botanical garden of the National Tropical Botanical Garden, and far quieter than Vizcaya. The light coming through that canopy is the best in the Grove.
The Barnacle Historic State Park
An 1890s house sitting in hardwood hammock, with a clear view out to Biscayne Bay. Small, and all the better for it.
Peacock Park and the bayfront
Open sky and water, which is exactly what you want after an hour under tree cover.
Main Highway and the Village Center
Sidewalk cafes, shopfronts and shade. Useful when the weather turns and we need somewhere covered.
Green light is a color problem, not a mood
Photograph a bride under a dense tropical canopy and the light arrives green. It reflects off leaves before it reaches skin, and it shows up most in a white dress, which acts like a sheet of paper for whatever color is falling on it.
The fix is partly where we stand and partly how the files are handled afterwards.
I look for gaps that let unfiltered sky in, and I keep one open location in the plan so we are never relying entirely on light that has passed through leaves.
