Broward gives you back the sky
I photograph across all three South Florida counties, and the honest difference in Fort Lauderdale is scale. The buildings along the beach are lower than Miami Beach, the streets are wider, and the light stays open for longer into the evening.
If Miami reads as dense and vertical, Fort Lauderdale reads as horizontal. That suits a long dress and a slow walk considerably better than people expect.
WHERE I SHOOT
Fort Lauderdale, place by place
The beachfront and the wave wall
The white serpentine wall along A1A is one of the cleanest graphic backgrounds in South Florida, and it runs for blocks.
Las Olas Boulevard
Shopfronts, awnings and the bridges out toward the Isles. Best early on a weekday morning.
Bonnet House Museum and Gardens
A 1920s estate with a desert garden and an orchid house, sitting on thirty five acres between the ocean and the Intracoastal. Permit required.
Hugh Taylor Birch State Park
Maritime hammock, a freshwater lagoon, and shade when the beach is unusable.
The Riverwalk and the New River
Downtown, water and reflections once the light drops. Good for the last twenty minutes.
Same ocean, more usable evening
Fort Lauderdale beach faces east, exactly like Miami Beach, so direct sun leaves the sand at the same point in the afternoon. The difference is what stands behind you. Lower buildings mean less of the sky is blocked, and the open glow after the sun has gone holds noticeably longer.
In practice that buys us time. A Broward session can run later and still produce usable frames, which matters when a bride is getting ready and the schedule slips, as it usually does.
