The hardest beach in Florida to photograph well
I am Woody Henry, and Miami Beach is the stretch I come back to most. It is also the one that punishes guesswork. The sand throws light straight back up into your face, the Art Deco pastels shift color by the hour, and nobody on Ocean Drive is going to step aside for a veil.
Knowing where to stand at 6:40 in the evening is most of the job. The rest is making you feel unhurried while we do it.
WHERE I SHOOT
Miami Beach, block by block
The Faena District
Gold leaf, deep red, and a gilded mammoth in a glass case. Best mid- morning, when the light comes in flat off the water and the crowds are still at breakfast.
South Pointe Park
Open sky, the jetty, and cruise ships sliding out behind you. My first choice for the last twenty minutes of sun.
The Art Deco District
Ocean Drive and Collins, pastel facades that read like a built set. Shoot early.
By ten the sidewalk belongs to everyone else.
Bal Harbour and the North Shore
Quieter sand, taller palms, no boardwalk traffic. Where we go when you want the beach without an audience.
Lincoln Road and the side streets
Shade, clean architecture, and usable backgrounds on the days the beach is completely blown out.
The island sets behind the city, not the sea
Miami Beach faces east. The sun goes down behind the skyline rather than over the water, and that single fact changes how a session has to be timed. The sand loses direct light early while the towers along Collins hold a warm reflected glow for another fifteen minutes.
So I plan Miami Beach backwards: sand first, architecture last, and the boardwalk at blue hour if you are willing to stay for it. I wrote more about how that window behaves in my guide to the Miami golden hour.
