What editorial actually means
Editorial means the frame is built, not found. Before a shutter falls we have chosen the hour, the wall, the direction the light travels, and the way your dress will move when you turn. A documentary photographer waits for the moment. An editorial photographer constructs the conditions in which the moment becomes inevitable, then waits for it inside a frame that was already going to work.
In practice that means you will be directed. Continuously, quietly, and without ever being left standing there wondering what to do with your hands. Most brides tell me afterwards that the direction was the part that made them relax, not the part that made them self- conscious.
It also means fewer photographs, chosen harder. I would rather hand you twenty frames you want to print than four hundred you will scroll past once.
Why Miami is difficult, and worth it
South Florida is one of the hardest places in the country to shoot an editorial bridal portrait, and one of the most rewarding once you know it. The sun sits close to overhead for much of the year. Sand and pale stone throw light straight back up under the chin. Afternoon storms arrive on a schedule that no planner controls, and humidity will find its way into hair and fabric within about eleven minutes.
None of that is a reason to shoot somewhere else. It is a reason to plan properly.
Almost everything I do before a session is about timing: which side of a building is usable at four in the afternoon, when a courtyard loses its sun, how long the good light on the sand actually lasts in July as opposed to January. This is the part of the job that does not show up in a portfolio and decides most of what you see in one.
Where I photograph
I work across three counties from a base in Miramar. In Miami-Dade that is Miami Beach, Coral Gables, Coconut Grove, Key Biscayne and the Design District. In Broward, Fort Lauderdale and the quieter water north of Las Olas. In Palm Beach County, Boca Raton and the estate gardens further up the coast.
The look
I shoot digitally and grade with film in mind. Warm skin that stays warm under mixed light, shadows that keep their depth instead of being lifted into gray, and color that does not fall apart at midday. Black and white when the frame is about shape rather than color, which in a stone cloister or a hard-lit doorway is often.
What I avoid: heavy orange-and-teal grading, skies replaced in post, and the kind of retouching that leaves a bride looking like a rendering of herself. If you would not recognize yourself in it, it is not editorial. It is illustration.
Questions brides ask
What is the difference between editorial and traditional wedding photography?
Traditional wedding photography documents the day as it happens and prioritises coverage. Editorial photography directs it, prioritizing a smaller number of strong, composed images. Most weddings want some of both. A bridal portrait session is where the editorial approach has the most room to work, because it is the one part of the day that is not on a schedule.
How long is an editorial bridal session?
Ninety minutes. The length is deliberate. Light needs roughly that long to move through its useful range, and most people need twenty of those minutes before they stop performing.
Do I need to do this on my wedding day?
No, and it is usually better if you do not. A separate bridal session means no timeline pressure, a second wear of the dress, and the option of an hour that actually suits the location rather than one dictated by the ceremony.
Do you photograph full weddings as well as portraits?
Yes. Bridal portraits are where I do my most deliberate work, but full wedding coverage across Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach is available.
How much does editorial wedding photography cost in Miami?
