I am Woody Henry

I photograph weddings across South Florida from a base in Miramar, which puts Miami-Dade, Broward and most of Palm Beach County inside an easy morning drive.

My work is editorial. That means the frames are built rather than found: the hour is chosen, the background is chosen, and you are directed through it continuously so that you never have to invent what to do with your hands. It produces fewer photographs than a purely documentary approach, and considerably better ones.

It also means I spend more time planning than most photographers do. Where the sun will be at 6:40pm, which courtyard is usable at two in the afternoon, how long a venue permit takes to clear. In this city that preparation is most of the job.

What photographing a Miami wedding actually involves

Light that has to be planned around

Miami sits far enough south that the sun is close to overhead for much of the year. A midday ceremony outdoors means hard shadow under every brow and a white dress at the edge of what a sensor can hold. The answer is not more equipment, it is a timeline built around the light, and that conversation should happen before the invitations go out rather than the week of.

Weather that will not be argued with

June through September is hurricane season and afternoon storms arrive most days. They typically pass inside an hour. Every venue worth booking has a covered fallback, and the photography plan should name it in advance rather than improvise. I have written a fuller piece on shooting through hurricane season.

Permits, which surprise people

Several of the best locations in the county are not simply available. Vizcaya requires a paid photography permit booked weeks ahead with a capped party size. County and state parks have their own rules. Getting this wrong on the day is the single most avoidable way to lose an hour of light. More detail in the permit guide.

A city with more looks than most

Mediterranean stone in Coral Gables, banyan canopy in Coconut Grove, Art Deco and open water on Miami Beach, quiet coastline on Key Biscayne. Few cities give you this range within forty minutes, and using it well is mostly a matter of sequencing the day so you reach the right place at the right hour.

Questions couples ask

How much does a wedding photographer cost in Miami?

It varies widely by coverage, hours and delivery. Current rates are on the pricing page. Budget separately for venue photography permits where they apply, because they are charged by the venue rather than the photographer and are easy to overlook.

How far in advance should I book?

Nine to twelve months for a Saturday in the December to April high season. Off- season and Friday or Sunday dates stay open considerably longer, and are usually cheaper at the venue too.

Do you travel outside Miami-Dade?

Yes, routinely. Broward and Palm Beach are standard coverage. Further afield is possible with travel arranged in advance.

Do you photograph the whole day or part of it?

Either. Full-day coverage from getting ready through the reception, or a shorter block built around the ceremony and portraits.

Do you shoot a second photographer?

Yes. Available and recommended for guest counts above roughly 120, or where the ceremony and preparation are in different locations.

When do we get the photographs?

Fourteen days for a portrait session. Full wedding galleries take longer; the timeline is confirmed in your contract before booking.

What if it rains on the day?

We use the covered fallback we identified in planning. Overcast light flatters faces, and a storm that clears before sunset often produces the best sky of the year.
