Miami gets the attention, and it deserves a good deal of it. But a lot of what makes Broward and Palm Beach counties easier to photograph is exactly what makes them less famous. Lower buildings, wider streets, quieter sand and considerably less competition for the same patch of ground at sunset.
These are the places I keep returning to north of the county line, and what each one actually gives you on camera.
Fort Lauderdale
Las Olas, Bonnet House, and a longer evening glow.
A 1920s estate sitting on thirty five acres between the ocean and the Intracoastal, with a desert garden, an orchid house and a courtyard that looks nothing like the rest of Florida. It is the strongest single location in Broward and it needs a photography permit booked in advance, which is covered in my guide to venue permits.
The beachfront wave wall
The white serpentine wall running along A1A is one of the cleanest graphic backgrounds in South Florida, and it goes on for blocks. It is public, it is free, and because the buildings opposite are low you keep open sky far later into the evening than you would on Ocean Drive.
Las Olas Boulevard
Shopfronts, awnings, and the bridges heading out toward the Isles.
Best early on a weekday, when the light is still soft and the pavement belongs to you. By lunchtime it belongs to everyone else.
Hugh Taylor Birch State Park
Maritime hammock and a freshwater lagoon on a strip between the Intracoastal and the ocean. This is a state park, so there is a gate fee and a closing time, and the closing time is the part that catches people out at sunset.
The Riverwalk and the New River
Downtown, water, and reflected light once the sun has gone. A good closing location when you want the last twenty minutes to look different from the first hour.
Boca Raton and Palm Beach County
Mizner Park
Addison Mizner brought the Mediterranean Revival idea north from Palm Beach, and the pink stucco, barrel tile and arched colonnades are still the defining look of Boca. Mizner Park is public and straightforward to work with, which is not something you can say about most of the buildings that look this good.
Red Reef Park and the Boca Inlet
Dune crossovers, sea grape, and boats running out through the cut.
The inlet gives you real movement in the background without a crowd in the frame, which is a rarer combination than it sounds.
Old Floresta
A 1920s Mizner-designed neighborhood with mature trees and quiet streets. It is residential, so we keep it brief, keep the noise down and stay off private lawns. Treated respectfully it is one of the loveliest twenty minutes in Palm Beach County.
Spanish River Park
Sea grape tunnels on one side and open lawn on the other, which means shade and sky in a single stop. Genuinely useful when the weather is not cooperating.
The Boca Raton Resort
Mizner’s Cloister and the tower are magnificent and entirely private.
Access runs through the venue rather than through a permit office, so this one works when you are a guest or holding an event there.
The practical difference from Miami
Fort Lauderdale beach faces east exactly as Miami Beach does, so direct sun leaves the sand at the same point in the afternoon. What changes is what stands behind you. Lower buildings block less sky, and the open glow after sunset holds noticeably longer. In practice that buys us time, which matters on a wedding day when the schedule slips, as it always does.
Boca is roughly forty five minutes north of Miami. I build that drive into the timing plan rather than pretending it is not there, which usually means starting earlier than an equivalent Miami session.
